The knitwear edit

24 October 2018

The temperature drop has its positives – one being the fact that it signals the start of jumper season, which means oversized and cosy silhouettes reign.  For autumn/winter 2018 there are a myriad of styles to choose from, be it a classic cable knit that works perfectly with denim or Whistles’ soft pink merino sweater that’s destined for this season’s metallic midi skirts. If you buy just five key pieces of knitwear for the months ahead, make it these.

1. The pretty pink jumper

Forget the winter blues, instead embrace la vie en rose with Whistles' blush pink jumper (top image). Crafted from a beautifully soft mohair and wool blend, it’s the epitome of cosy luxury. Wear it with a metallic midi skirt and sleek ankle boots for a chic ensemble you can wear day and night.

2. The trophy knit

Animal print is really making its mark this season, but before you automatically reach for leopard – we dare you to try its equally impactful sister pattern, zebra. Take this statement jumper: the monochromatic palette means that it will go with everything, plus its lively nature will give your wardrobe a new lease of life.

3. The oversized sweater

For days when comfort comes first, it has to be this tactile, supersized knitted jumper. Proving you don’t have to jeopardise your style credentials when you simply want to feel cosy, throw it on over skinny jeans or layered over a slip dress to balance the volume on your top half. (Emma Willis loves it, too).

4. The classic cable knit

Every winter wardrobe needs a cable knit, especially this season when granddad-inspired knitwear dominated the catwalks. We love this navy version – it’s a shade that suits every skin tone and epitomises the essence of French chic. Team with black denim and a structured coat for a truly Parisian finish.

5. The on-trend cape

The refined rodeo trend is huge for autumn, as are capes. Combine the two and you’ve got a cosy cover-up that guarantees to turn heads. How to wear it? It’s less complicated than you might think. Style it as you would a blanket scarf or lighter cover-up: draped over a biker jacket for extra warmth or wrapped over a simple knit underneath. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit subtle and fitted so the cape can do the talking.
