What to wear to a summer wedding

10 May 2018

With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle due to tie the knot in just a matter of days, it seems that weddings are the current topic du jour. If you want to be the best-dressed attendee this season (royal or otherwise), you’ve come to the right place. Be it an exotic beach setting, a traditional country affair or the tenth ceremony you’ve been to this year, don’t miss our round-up of the best looks to make sure you stand out in style, without showing up the bride.

The traditional country wedding

We all know the drill with this one: florals, 50s-style silhouettes, a chic cover-up just in case it rains. There’s also a high probability you will be walking across grass at some point, which means footwear needs to be considered carefully. Our top tip? Wedges if you’re looking for heel height, pointed flats if you want something a little more modern. For those who wish to break with tradition, a jumpsuit or tailored suit will give you a contemporary edge.

The blow-the-budget wedding

When the invite suggests five-star luxury with no expense spared, you’ll need an outfit that truly raises the bar in elegance and sophistication. Use the dress code as an opportunity to experiment with dramatic hemlines, creating a look that makes you feel a million dollars – and if it sparkles, even better. Rest assured, if you feel overdressed, you’re on the right track.

The destination wedding

You’re heading to exotic shores, which means normal nuptial rules no longer apply. Narrow your search to floaty silhouettes in light fabrics, and if you’re feeling bold – this is the perfect excuse to embrace a vibrant colour (yellow is key this season) or print. If hats are your thing, try a wide-brimmed straw style for an effortless alternative to traditional millinery and be sure to swap heels for luxe flat sandals (although let’s face it, you’ll no doubt be dancing barefoot by sunset).

The 10th wedding of the season

Suddenly everyone you know is getting married in the space of a few months. You've recycled the same dress several times already and with social media tracking your every look, you need to get creative. This is where tailored separates and accessories are your best friend. For a cool spin on the frock, opt for a simple, tailored jumpsuit, adding personality with statement accessories. If you want to keep it pretty, switch it up with a light knit and skirt combination (if it’s good enough for Olivia Palermo’s bridal look, it’s good enough for us). The key is to think outside of the box.
