STYLE SOS

How to stay cool in the sun

11 July 2018

Summer is upon us. And whether you have the luxury of travelling to a tropical part of the world or are spending your holidays at home, the common conundrum of staying cool – yet stylish – still needs to be tackled. Joe Ottaway, image consultant and menswear supremo, tells us how.

"Whether your go-to look is inspired by the sartorial elegance of Savile Row or the relaxed feel of riviera chic, staying cool (both physically and metaphorically) in the summer is paramount. It’s worth considering a host of factors before making any decisions; a gentleman's lifestyle and location, for example, will dictate how he combats this universal problem.

"One common denominator that stays true above everything is fabric choice. Choosing the most appropriate fabric, regardless of where you are on the world, is important. Avoid heavy fabrics and opt for lightweight linens and cottons that are breathable and practical when you’re on the move.

"To add texture and channel your modern-day Atticus Finch, choose a lightly coloured suit. Teamed with a crisp cotton open-collar shirt, it will create a perfect summer look. The suit has evolved and is no longer one dimensional, or deemed to be uber formal – it’s now much easier to wear during the summer. Try it as separates, too. Not only will this add diversity to your wardrobe, but it will create a stylish, contemporary look in an effortless way. A classic cotton chino will be the perfect partner to a navy blazer and an open-collar shirt.

"When travelling or holidaying overseas, try and avoid looking like the classic Brit abroad. For a timeless look, embrace the natural feel and silhouette of a relaxed linen shirt and tailored cotton shorts. If you’re looking for something more trend-led, a short-sleeved shirt will definitely raise the style stakes. Opt for softer pastels, or try a subtle geometric print, wear with a relaxed pair of trousers and slip-on loafers or suede monk straps to really raise the game."
