How to make flip flops work

18 July 2018

Ah, summer. A time where the line between appropriate and not are easily blurred when it comes to the clothes we wear for both work or play. We get it – hot, stuffy public transport and an even hotter office can bring even the most cool tempered men out in a stifling sweat. But when you reach a certain moment in your life, it’s time to start un-blurring that line, starting with flip flops.

For this humble sandal, there’s a time and a place where it works, and when it most certainly doesn’t – and we’re here to make sure you don’t fall foul to the latter.

Attempting to woo a potential partner? Whatever you do, leave the flip flops at home. Don’t be the guy that shows up to a date, turning heads because of his ridiculous choice of footwear. For a date, go for something a little more forgiving, occasion-appropriate and – dare we say it – sensible.

The same goes for work, which is absolutely no place for the shoe in question. We’ve witnessed far too many men attempting to rock them on a day to day basis this summer, but it’s time to stop. Right away. No matter how relaxed your working environment, take it from us when we say that your colleagues, your bosses and your clients absolutely do not want to see your toes – ever. Your shoes, apparently, are the first thing that a person notices about you, so it pays to get it right – especially in the office.

Step off the plane and into any exotic holiday destination and, other than a flamboyant array of swimwear, sunglasses and patterned shirts, you’re guaranteed to see your fair share of flip flops – and for good reason. A holiday, summer weekend or British beach day are the perfect places for you to wear this humble shoe to your heart’s content. Pair with everything from chino shorts and short sleeved shirts in the evening, to swimming trunks and your favourite polo during the day. Let the rest of the outfit reflect your shoe choice – and have fun with it.
