How to layer in style
7 November 2018
The concept of layering sounds simple enough, but understanding the difference between doing so for the sake of warmth and for the sake of style is imperative, and getting the balance between the two is essential.
In the most simple terms, layering is a building block that acts as a means of keeping in the heat when the weather turns on its head. Doing it for sartorial gain, though, is a different ballgame. Take one look at any well-dressed man in any stylish city during the winter months and you’ll notice a common thread: these men have learnt the art of layering with ease and style and without looking like an abominable snowman. Here’s how you can do the same, too.

Add a gilet
If you have even an ounce of interest in style, you’ll know by now that the simple act of investing in a gilet is one of the best things you can do for any cold weather outfit. But getting the type of gilet right is important, and the best one for the job always tends to be a sleeveless, funnel- or crew-neck style, dark in tone and minimal in fuss. Whether you’re wearing it on top of a jumper and underneath a suit jacket, or paired with your favourite knitwear and jeans at the weekend, it truly is a wear-with-anything hero that’ll never go out of style.
Double up on jumpers
The key with layering in style is getting the material right. Pairing two thick, bulky jumpers isn’t going to do anyone any favours – even for the most svelte man in the world. Instead, picking something thinner and more lightweight will allow you not only room to breathe, but the opportunity to add a strong piece of outerwear into the mix, too. Incorporate different styles and textures to avoid looking like you’ve just chucked on whatever you can find, and why not start with something simple such as a roll neck underneath a tonal zip, finished off with a brilliant piece of outerwear.
Thick layers are always a good idea
For years, a cardigan has been commonly associated with someone a little older in age and a little less sure of his own tastes or style. In recent years, though, it’s flipped 180 degrees as an important staple in every man’s wardrobe. Understanding how to style it and take advantage of it, though, is paramount. For work and play, style it out by adding slimmer, more tapered styles around it – slim- or skinny-fit trousers and a classic, lightweight shirt are good options – and don’t be afraid to smarten it up by adding a formal jacket on top.
