Seven autumn essentials for your home

31 October 2018

Kit your home out this autumn with some of the latest accessories from our home department.

Think bedding to snuggle into, throws and cushions to get comfy with and brand new lighting to keep you aglow during those darker autumnal evenings.

Foliage-print bedding is top of our list this season, and so are cushions and throws which have pompom details. But there's even more newness to discover from our homeware department to help get your home looking autumn-ready. We've compiled a shortlist of seven items to think about this season, which will be both practical and stylish additions.

- New bedding -

This latest bed set, called Brushed Cotton Berry Sprig, is available in both a pale natural and a mauve colourway option. The berries are multicoloured in orange, green and blue, inspired by winter woodland, the design is abundant with the colourful little fruits. Choose from single, double, king and super king size.

It's not just a stylish revamp for your bedroom, it's a practical one too. The brushed cotton material has been specifically designed to keep you cosy during the winter nights.

- Lighting -

Autumn brings with it the changing of the clocks, which this year happens on the 28 October, and with that we should start considering our lighting at home. It's important to remember that with less natural light on offer, we need to think about supplementing the lighting levels in our home as we will be relying on them more over the winter.

People often just think of lighting as a central pendant in the room, like the Copper Dixon Easy Pendant (pictured above), or recessed spotlights in the ceiling, but what other forms of lighting can enhance our homes during the darker months?

Table lamps

Perch a table lamp on a side table next to your sofa, or on a shelving unit or sideboard in your living room. A table lamp can instantly change the feeling of a room, thanks to its lower lighting output, and will make a space feel far more relaxed in comparison to sitting with the main light on. It's the classic go-to mood lighting option.

Floor-standing

Floor lamps can be both a lovely interiors statement as well as a practical item. They are, generally speaking, tall and slim, and because of this they fit easily into corners where other pieces of furniture might be too large, transforming that area of the room into a special corner, instead of a neglected one.

- Throws -

Add extra layers of comfort with a selection of throws. Layering, which is an important characteristic of our Bracken trend this season, is a sensible styling touch for winter decor.

Consider placing one or two throws on your living room sofa or armchair. In addition, place one at the end of your bed or on your bedroom armchair, so you can grab it and snuggle in if you feel chilly. It's such a lovely touch.

- Cushions -

A selection of cushions makes for a very comforting lounge. Edit your collection and refresh your couch to suit your personal style.

We love the Knitted PomPom Cushion, pictured above, which is available in a lovely selection of colours. Shop from a big range and mix and match - the best thing about a cushion collection is that, often, the more eclectic your selection is the more homely it looks.

- Curtains -

Drape a set of new curtains at the window which will keep the cold out and the warmth in. Whether you are living in a traditional building or a modern one, curtains aren't just for style, they are for practicality too. Some of our curtains even have thermal lining.

Older houses and flats look stylish with a set of statement print curtains, like our Velvet Metallic Geo Eyelet Curtains, and are relatively easy to include as part of your decor scheme. Modern buildings, however, are not always as easy.

People who have contemporary taste may see curtains as a 'traditional' look, however, curtains help hugely in both keeping heat in the building, and contribute to the all-important 'cosy' feeling during winter.

If you don't want to draw attention to curtains then simply choose from one of our more neutral sets, such as the plain Cotton Eyelet Blackout and Thermal Lined curtains (pictured above).

- Festive doormat -

A doormat is always a good idea when expecting guests during the likes of Halloween, Christmas and New Year. Winter is also generally a bit messier than summer, as we tend to drag in the fallen leaves and muddier shoes into the home. You can opt for a plain design, like our Washable option, or for something altogether more fun, such as the Santa Belt Festive Doormat and Craft Check Festive Doormat.

- Candles and room scents -

There's nothing quite like a candle to add a little touch of luxury. Place one or two (you can mix and match if you wish) on the mantlepiece, a sideboard or your bedside table. We have a selection of sweet scents to choose from, including our Festive Spice, Love You Lots and Mulled Wine fragrances.
