The essential winter homeware kit

23 January 2019

Dark mornings, and often even darker evenings, mean that our minds and bodies can start to feel a little low during the depths of winter. This is very normal. To help combat the lack of natural light and the colder weather our interiors editor Rory Robertson has put together a quick list of 'must have' winter homeware accessories - objects which we hope will help pull you through the winter, feeling warm and well at home.

Biding time until spring, post-Christmas, can feel like a bit of a long haul. But let's look at the positives. It offers us the opportunity to get some snuggling and hibernation time in before spring kicks in. So what homeware kit do we need in order to rest up, relax and keep a positive mindset?

Weighty, wintery bedding

Summer bedding is too light during winter, and it will struggle to keep you warm through the night. Have you ever woken up feeling cold? It’s not a pleasant experience. That’s why, top of our winter homeware kit list, is good, winter-proof bedding.

We recommend considering how you normally sleep. If you’re constantly fluctuating in temperature then try our Temperature Regulating duvet, which will adapt to keep your temperature more level throughout the night.

Or, if you want the more traditional option of layers so you can add and remove extra heat instantly, then opt for something like a 10.5 tog  or 13.5 tog duvet, and then an additional 3 tog or 7 tog as an extra – that you can use if and when you feel it’s required. When it comes to duvet covers and pillow cases we suggest something along the lines of the Waffle set. The key to making it through winter is to sleep well so that you can tackle each day with as much gusto as possible.

Tactile throws and additional lighting

You can further enhance your sleeping experience by choosing additional throws to layer your bedding look. This looks great and acts as a practical styling choice.

You can shop our selection of throws and choose one or two that suit your home, and don’t forget you can also add throws to the living room too – sofas, armchairs and reading or TV corners all benefit from being styled with a blanket or too.

Have you been struggling to see around the house lately? Lighting levels are equally important to improving your mind and general well-being. You don’t need to spend big, just consider adding some additional table or floor lamps to areas at home which are notably darker during winter. There are the more obvious additions – like a floor lamp in the corner of the living room, but you can also think about adding a table lamp to the entrance hallway, or that neglected corner of the spare room, too. The brighter and lighter your home is during winter, the better you will feel.
