Partywear hits

14 November 2018

Fashion editor, kidswear stylist and founder of The Little Stylist, Charlotte Kewley shares her top kids’ partywear picks

If I’m totally honest my kids probably have more parties and social events in the diary for the festive season than I do. Which is actually a good thing as their wardrobes are far more prepared for it. Here’s how I style boys and girls for perfect party dressing...

When styling girls, I’m a big fan of a cool, understated look but when it comes to Christmas and parties I think they can never be overdressed. Plus, most girls up to a certain age (I generalise here but from experience it’s usually the truth) love a tutu, tulle, sparkle, frills, fancy dress and anything that twirls. And always a dress. I’m particularly in love with ballerina styles at the moment like this tulle dress which is also a complete bargain – I plan to purchase both colourways. Then sparkly flats or Converse hi-top sneakers (depending on the occasion) to complete the look. My other go-to festive option for girls is the more traditional tartan or red velvet look, I veer more towards this for a daytime party or family celebration around the big day itself. This red tartan dress with its ruffle bib detail is one of the most charming I’ve seen.

People find boys’ partywear harder to navigate. Namely because there isn’t just one item (a dress) involved. For younger boys I find traditional suits a little too formal and stiff, I also find that my own son wants to wear things that are a little more fun and comfortable. I love these cute navy cord chinos which would also look good turned up a little, with a classic oxford shirt like this one and bow tie or classic white tee, Beckham brothers-fashion, then Converse-style hi-tops. I also quite like the more traditional look favoured by Prince George of a cute white or check shirt with a knit jumper or cardigan over the top. But then this grey waistcoat set is adorable for a super-special occasion.
