How to pull off the pastel trend

26 April 2018

Sorbet shades dominated the catwalks this season. And while pastels might be the perfect palette for a pretty spring refresh, they may not immediately strike you as the easiest trend to pull off. Here, senior fashion features editor Charlene Barton shows you how to integrate them into your wardrobe, whether it’s via a simple nod with accessories or going full pelt, top-to-toe.

TIP ONE

Go head to toe

Sharp and sophisticated suiting was a firm favourite with designers such as Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford this season, and if it came in the form of powdery pastels, even better. Consider this the grown-up way to tackle the trend as structured tailoring counterbalances the sugary tones. The result? A powerful and polished combination. For the bold, match the shade from top to bottom or if that feels too extreme, break it up with a simple white T-shirt or blouse underneath. Equally, a dress will achieve the same effect but deliver a more overtly feminine message.

TIP TWO

Mix with denim

If head-to-toe suiting feels too bold for you, simply mix and match with denim. Most washes will work here so don’t overthink it, but if you want to stay closer to the catwalk trend – pick a lighter wash, or white, so your whole look feels fresh and bright. A blazer and jeans duo is a no-brainer and will work for any dress code, whether you’re attending brunch or a client meeting. For a casual spin, work it the other way around, teaming an oversized denim jacket with tailored trousers. This rule works beyond suiting, too, so if you’re unsure what to wear your new lemon pleated skirt or lilac sweater with – refer back to your trusty blue threads.

TIP THREE

Play with accessories

If the thought of a standout pastel piece terrifies you, try dipping your toe in the trend, literally with your footwear. Whichever shade you go for, style it as you would classic navy, black or white – you’ll be surprised how easy it is to build it into your wardrobe.  For best practice though, keep the rest of your look simple – at least while you build confidence. And the same goes for other accessories, like jewellery or handbags – the key is simply to remember to have fun with it.
