Buyers guide - dining tables

22 February 2018

A dining table is regarded as one of the key pieces of furniture that you will buy for your home. With this in mind it is vital not just to opt for the first one that takes your fancy. Here are a few key points to help you buy wise and invest well.

Size

It's easy to get carried away when you set your eyes on something you like. With this particular purchase the most common mistake people make is to approach it with thoughts of having a large group of family and friends sitting around a big table. However, we don't all have the dining space to accommodate such a sizeable, permanent piece of furniture.

In this instance an extendable table makes great sense, especially if you only occasionally need extra place settings. Adaptable tables like the Bronx design have sections, commonly known as leafs, which slide underneath when they are not required. It's ideal for those of us that require a smaller table for day-to-day use but extra place settings for special events. The 6-8 Seater Bronx is fully extendable from 1.6 metres to 2 metres. There's also the option to go smaller with the handy 4-6 seater Bronx dining table too.

Material

Consider what the table is going to be made of before making that final decision. Do you have children? If you do then it might be wise to choose something with a practical top that will withstand wear-and-tear well. If in doubt, an oiled or sealed veneer wooden table, like our Shaftesbury, should wear gracefully. The Shaftesbury comes both as a fixed dining table and an extendable 6-8 seater dining table.

Shape

Maybe you don't have a separate dining area but still require somewhere to sit down and eat? When it comes to modern homes and new builds room sizes are, widely speaking, smaller than those of older properties, so this isn't an uncommon problem to encounter. If you need something that offers more versatility then a round shaped table, which generally blends better into an environment, makes much more sense than a square or rectangle. It also offers a more adaptable seating arrangement.

Style

Last but certainly not least, you will want a dining table that suits your style. Having contemplated the size, shape and material of your table make sure it also embodies the right look to fit with your decor. From the slightly more rustic, like the Camden Light 8 seater, to the timeless mid-century style of the Ercol Chesha, we have a large selection of styles to choose from so you won't be stuck for choice. If you're not sure then opt for simple, classic looks like our Malvern dining table and bench set
