SPOTLIGHT ON

Fit for a royal baby

5 April 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge is due to give birth to her third child this month and, while we don’t know

if it’s a girl or boy, we do have some idea of what the new addition will wear. Charlotte Duck looks back on

royal babywear classics and seeks inspiration from the new Next baby collections

While fashion trends come and go, the way the Royal Family dress their babies has remained largely

the same. In particular, there’s one standout look they keep coming back to, especially for boys: the romper

Princes Edward, William and George have all been photographed in them, often with an embroidered motif

or decorative pleating on the chest. It’s easy to see why these all-in-ones have the royal seal of approval – they’re

smart but don’t have the fussiness you get from most formal baby outfits. As the mini HRHs grow up and start

walking around, it’s rare that you’ll see them in a classic pair of trousers; instead, dungarees or shorts, the latter held up

with braces and accessorised with ribbed socks pulled to just below the knee, are the order of the day. For both,

a smart shirt underneath is a given but the royals often choose a peplum collar for a cuter, more comfortable fit.

If you are looking for inspiration, when buying for a newborn in your life,

don't forget to read our newborn essentials check-list first.

And what about those adorable little princesses? The go-to style for royal baby girls centres around a cotton tea

dress in a floral, vintage-inspired print. Nostalgia features heavily in royal fashion choices, and the shapes and patterns

used in many of the dresses they wear today wouldn’t have seemed out of place fifty or even a hundred years ago. At first

glance, these frocks may seem relatively simple but, look closer, and you’ll notice little elegant details such as frill collars

and miniature decorative buttons. Pretty as they are, these dresses won’t keep a royal tot warm so for cold days and

breezy outings, cashmere is the cover-up of choice. Soft, warm and luxurious, it’s become a fashion staple in the

royal nursery, whether the little ones are leaving hospital for the first time or off to a friend’s birthday party. While

protocol dictates many of their style choices, the royals aren’t averse to having some fun with their fashion and they

often do it with their choice of accessory. Princess Charlotte loves finishing off her look with a carefully positioned bow

in her hair, lace trim socks and some white leather Mary Janes but whether her little sister or brother will have the

same interest in clothes, only time will tell.
